Supernovae and Gamma-Ray Bursts
نویسنده
چکیده
Supernovae are explosions of stars which are triggered either by the implosion of the core of a star or a thermonuclear runaway, causing a bright optical display lasting for weeks to years. This chapter first explains the main explosion types, how they are classified and the principles that determine their lightcurves. It then discusses in more detail some of the most important supernova types, specifically SN 1987A, the last naked-eye supernova near our own Galaxy, Type Ia supernovae that have been used as standardizable cosmological distance candles, and gamma-ray bursts and their related supernovae. Special emphasis is given to the link of the various supernova types to their progenitor systems and a discussion of any outstanding issues. Causes for the large diversity of supernova types and sub-types are then systematically explored: these include binarity, the explosion mechanisms, rotation, metallicity and dynamical effects. Finally, some of the major topics of current interest are briefly discussed.

A White Dwarf Merger Paradigm for Supernovae and Gamma-Ray Bursts
Gamma-ray bursts can appear to be a hundred times as luminous as supernovae, but their underlying energy source(s) have remained a mystery. However, there has been evidence for some time now of an association of gamma-ray bursts with supernovae of Type Ib and Ic, a fact which has been exploited by a number of models, to explain the gamma-ray burst phenomenon. Here we interpret the results of ba...
متن کاملThe Synoptic Swift Synergy – Catching Gamma-Ray Bursts Before They Fly
The advent of large panoramic photometric surveys of the sky offers the possibly of exploring the association of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with supernovae. To date, a few gamma-ray bursts have been connected possibly with supernovae: GRB 980425 – SN 1998bw, GRB 011121 – SN 2001ke, GRB 970228 and GRB 980326. A combination of a large detection rate of GRBs and rapid coverage of a large portion of t...

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT We present a rigorous method, based on Bayesian inference, for calculating the odds favoring the hypothesis that any particular class of astronomical transients produce gamma-ray bursts over the hypothesis that they do not. We then apply this method to a sample of 83 Type Ia supernovae and a sample of 20 Type Ib-Ic supernovae. We find overwhelming odds against...
متن کاملAbsolute Magnitude Distribution and Light Curves of Gamma-ray Burst Supernovae
Photometry data were collected from the literature and analyzed for supernovae that are thought to have a gamma–ray burst association. There are several gamma–ray bursts afterglow light curves that appear to have a supernova component. For these light curves, the supernova component was extracted and analyzed. A supernova light curve model was used to help determine the peak absolute magnitudes...
متن کاملStellar Explosions: from Supernovae to Gamma-ray Bursts
Current understanding of core collapse and thermonuclear supernovae is reviewed. Recent progress in unveiling the nature of cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRB) is discussed, with the focus on the apparent link of several GRBs with an energetic subclass of stellar explosions, type Ib/c core-collapse supernovae. This relation provides the strong case that the GRB phenomenon is connected with the final ...
متن کاملTeV Scale Quantum Gravity and Mirror Supernovae as Sources of Gamma Ray Bursts
Mirror matter models have been suggested recently as an explanation of neutrino puzzles and microlensing anomalies. We show that mirror supernovae can be a copious source of energetic gamma rays if one assumes that the quantum gravity scale is in the TeV range. We show that under certain assumptions plausible in the mirror models, the gamma energies could be degraded to the 10 MeV range (and pe...
